Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
The sixth chakra, between the eyebrows — insight, intuition, inner seeing. Element: light.
Ajna means 'command' or 'perceive'. Located at the point between the eyebrows — the 'third eye' — it is associated with intuition, imagination, and the ability to see patterns rather than just events. Its color is indigo, its seed sound Om (or Ksham in some traditions), and it is linked with the mind's eye rather than the physical eyes.
Practice for Ajna is inward practice: eyes-closed balances that remove the visual crutch, forward folds that turn the senses down, Child's Pose with the forehead resting — the brow point touching the mat or a block is a direct, physical nod to this center — and meditation itself, where drishti turns from an outer point to an inner one.
In practice
- Rest the forehead in Child's Pose and let the brow point be a place of pressure and quiet — that is Ajna as sensation.
- Traditional seed sound: Om. Color: indigo.
- Try Tree Pose with eyes closed for three breaths; proprioception replaces vision, and the difference is instructive.
