How to choose a printed yoga mat

Short version: pick the surface first, then the thickness and length, then the design. Updated 2026-10-09.

1. The surface

Printed and art yoga mats almost always use a microfiber suede top, because the design can run edge to edge into the fabric. The base underneath does the gripping on the floor, usually natural rubber or foam.

2. Thickness

3 mm is slim and easy to roll and carry, and keeps you close to the floor for standing work. 5–6 mm gives more padding for kneeling but is heavier. A common fix for a slim mat is to fold the end over under your knees.

3. Length and width

Standard mats run about 24″ wide and 68–72″ long. If you're over about 6 ft tall, go for 72″ or longer. BLKMAT mats are approx. 24″ × 70″ (61 × 178 cm).

4. The design

Busy, dark patterns hide everyday marks better than pale solids. Line designs that run down the centerline (a column of moons, a single fern, a centerline with hand and foot bands) also give you a reference for where to place your hands and feet.

5. Check before you buy

6. Care

Spot clean with mild soap and water, let it dry fully, and keep it out of long direct sun so the print stays vivid.

FAQ

What is the best surface for a printed yoga mat?

Microfiber suede is the most common top for art and photo-printed yoga mats because ink can be applied edge to edge into the fabric surface. It is usually bonded to a natural rubber or foam base for grip on the floor.

Is a 3 mm yoga mat thick enough?

3 mm is a slim, travel-friendly thickness that keeps you close to the floor for standing and balancing poses. If you want more cushioning for kneeling, fold the end of the mat over or add a separate knee pad. 5–6 mm mats give more padding but are heavier to carry.

What size should a yoga mat be?

Most standard mats are about 24 inches wide and 68–72 inches long. If you are taller than about 6 ft, look for 72 inches or longer so your hands and feet both fit in poses like downward dog.

Do microfiber suede yoga mats get slippery?

Suede tops can feel smooth when completely dry. Many people find the grip improves once the surface is slightly damp, so a light mist of water at the start can help.

How do I clean a printed yoga mat?

Spot clean with mild soap and water, wipe it down, and let it air dry flat or hanging. Keep it out of direct sunlight for long periods so the print stays vivid. Do not machine wash unless the maker says you can.

Does a natural rubber yoga mat contain latex?

Yes. Natural rubber contains latex. Anyone with a latex allergy should choose a latex-free material such as TPE or PVC.

Can printed yoga mats be returned?

It depends on the seller. Many printed and art mats only accept returns for defects, so check the return policy and size before you buy. BLKMAT replaces or refunds damaged, misprinted or defective mats reported within 30 days of delivery.
